Top 5 Interior Design Trends For 2022

Are you curious about the upcoming interior design trends in 2022? You aren’t the only one who feels this way. As a forward-thinking custom home builder, we enjoy keeping up with developing trends and the newest in design so that we can always offer our Ottawa homeowners something new and exciting.

Colors

In 2022, design trends will be nostalgic, with a hint to retro 70’s vibes and urban 90’s urban influence. Warmer, earthy tones such as taupe, beige, light greys, and hues of green are expected to replace the chilly grey tones that have been popular in recent years. Combining warm and cool tones offers a timeless palette that flows naturally as trends change. If you like textures and patterns, you’ll be happy to know that mixing organic materials, concrete, flowery wallpaper, and marble veining into designs is a trend that’s not going away anytime soon.

Materials

The switch to lighter-toned wood will be one of the most significant developments, and it will be bigger than ever in 2022. Natural white oak engineered hardwood flooring and cabinetry have recently become increasingly popular, which goes well with the warmer tone trend.

Rutherford also expects a lot of change in the tile industry in the coming year. Subway tiles, for example, will shift from rectangular to square designs, emphasising larger dimensions and more industrial design elements like handcrafted edges, textured surfaces, tone variations, and quirky colour choices.

Furniture

We’re expecting a lot of texture and contrast in terms of furnishings. So expect to see velvet, rattan, and multi-functional pieces alongside clean-lined, contemporary pieces. We’re particularly excited to hear that furniture in rich cognac, sage green, and mustard yellow hues will make a splash, providing some contrast to the earth-tone palettes that are becoming increasingly popular.

Innovation

Every year, it appears that homes are becoming more aware and wiser, and the technology forecasts for 2022 imply that this trend will continue. Home automation will continue to make it simple for homeowners to operate anything from lights to home security, entertainment systems, and more using voice commands, remote controls, or mobile devices in 2022.

Some of our favourites include smart heat sensors and smoke alarms that warn emergency workers, lighting that adjusts brightness based on natural illumination, and schedule-controlled blinds.

Workspaces

With everyone working from home, we predict that minimalist designs and functional, clutter-free spaces will remain a major concern in the coming year. Instead of pastels or dark colours, neutrals and plenty of natural light will be used to create more relaxing surroundings in the coming year. More house plants will also be included in office and home design as a terrific mood enhancer and easy method to obtain some fresh air.
